Some
of your Anchormen need to speak with, and to Nigerians in a way to allow
Nigerians hear and understand what is being said by a few of your anchormen in
their broadcast to the Nigerian nation first, and to the world. They need to speak with the Nigerian-African
accent to enable every Nigerian listening to the broadcast to understand, and
to give that African-Nigerian identity to the Channels Television broadcast
medium.
In
the attempt to please the few foreigners in our mist, one of the excuses of
some Nigerians, a few of the anchors speak as if they are Europeans. They join their teeth in a configured mouth
that produces an Englishman’s voice-sound and accent. This allows the Studio or Station to lose its
native or African identity especially that the broadcasters are not wearing any
of the Nigerian native dresses such as the Danshiki, Umbari, Agbada or the
Jumpa, for the men; and the Buba and Iro, and the Up and Down for the women.
In
my own opinion, the Channels Television has a very good reputation that needs
to be promoted and protected having been established by a man, Mr. John Momoh, one
whose voice in broadcasting was acclaimed by all, nationally and
internationally. His voice, as distinct an African voice from the Kingdom of
Etsako was in the ranks of the Abazoros in broadcasting in Nigeria. I praise
his efforts, foresight, and skills that established the Channels Television.
We
should not imitate wrongly and wrongly imitate others while we run from who we
are at the regret of our God given ethnicity and identity. Those who do not understand us when we speak
in our own voice should learn to understand us just as we have learnt to
understand them. Nigeria has what should
make others have the need to learn, not only to understand, but also to learn
to speak our languages. All we need done
is repackaging of ourselves.
I
thought of making the above observation. I am here on a short visit to witness
the just successfully concluded Nigeria 2015 Presidential Election in which
Nigerians made me proud as a Nigerian. I had the opportunity to watch some of
the events on Channels Television. One of your Reporters, Seun (Okinbaloye?)
impressed me as a good reporter and a keen analyst; he is good.
